Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course aims to introduce students to oTree, a versatile Python-based framework for designing and conducting online experiments in the social sciences. oTree is a leading framework used for experimental research as well as for online surveys in political science, behavioral economics, and analytical sociology, and has also been used by organizations such as the World Bank and the OECD. oTree does not require any software to be installed on subjects‘ devices; it can run on any device with a web browser, be it a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone.
This course is suitable for absolute beginners and semi-beginners. No programming experience is required. We will start with basic Python skills and then move on to the basics of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. We will not delve into the details of these programming languages, but will cover the basics needed for oTree. This course is not a substitute for other programming courses. Most of our class time will be spent programming social experiments and survey questionnaires. This course assumes a basic understanding of experimental methodology in the social sciences, but I will also briefly introduce each experiment at the beginning of each session. Students will gain the knowledge necessary to program experiments and surveys of simple complexity in oTree and run them online. Students will also have the opportunity to discuss specific programming problems they have encountered while developing their own projects.
