The Lithuanian religious community Romuva understands itself as the continuation of the “ancient Baltic faith,” with roots in the beliefs of the pre-Christian period of what is now Lithuania. Since the restoration of Lithuanian independence and the adoption of the Law on Religious Communities and Associations in 1992, Romuva has sought official state recognition. Why was recognition denied to Romuva, despite multiple parliamentary votes and legislative terms, until it was finally granted in 2024?
This course examines the parliamentary debate surrounding Romuva’s recognition through a discourse-analytical lens. It focuses on the actors involved, the arguments they advanced, and the ways in which key concepts were constructed and contested. These discourses are situated within their historical and theoretical contexts and analyzed through primary sources, including legislation, court rulings, parliamentary records, and public letters.
