Technology is no longer just something we use—it’s something we live. From social networks to artificial intelligence and robotics, technology has fundamentally transformed how we experience the world, understand life, and connect with one another. Concepts that have shaped human existence for centuries—life, death, friendship, love, sex, truth, and identity—are now being redefined in ways we could have never imagined.
This course invites you to critically explore these transformations through the lens of ancient and contemporary philosophy. We will draw on the wisdom of Chinese, Indian, Greek, and Persian philosophers, as well as modern thinkers who grapple with technology’s role in our lives. Together, we’ll ask thought-provoking questions:
• How has technology changed our ideas of friendship and community?
• What does love mean in a world of digital connections and algorithms?
• How do AI and robotics challenge what it means to be human?
• Can timeless teachings from Confucius, Buddha, Socrates, or Rumi guide us in navigating this technological era?
• Most importantly, how can we build a good life—one that is meaningful, authentic, and fulfilling—in the midst of constant technological change?
Through a combination of engaging discussions, close readings of philosophical texts, and critical reflections, this course will help you develop a deeper understanding of how technology shapes our lives and how we might reclaim agency and meaning in this rapidly evolving world. By the end, you’ll not only gain a richer philosophical perspective but also the tools to think critically and live thoughtfully in the digital age.
