Kommentar/Beschreibung

This M6-seminar is Part Two of your hand-on Research Workshop on Qualitative Methods of Cultural Research and Ethnology (M5). Since Winter Semester 2025/26, we are testing M5 and M6 as a joint seminar over two semesters as, it is much more beneficial for conducting your own research project.
But, if you have done M5 at a previous stage and still need to do M6, you are welcome and we will find a solution for you!

Ideally, in M5 you have learnt how to design your own research project and how to collect data. You have developed a research question, outlined your project in a proposal, chosen the right methods for your research question, and discussed the ethics and practicalities. You have gained access to the field, conducted participant observations and interviews, written observation notes and transcribed interviews. You have struggled with the difficulties of all of that; experienced the ups and downs of this process. Perhaps you needed to adapt your research and have reflected a lot on this process.

Now, it is time to move forward to the analysis of your empirical material (the interview transcripts and observation material). In this part of the seminar, you will be trained in how to reach a rich and deep interpretation of the material by learning how to code the data and write interpretive memos. You will learn how to find your style of writing, integrate theoretical concepts and then actually write-up your own findings.

Like last semester, this seminar is designed to create a supportive environment with a lot of peer group work, providing space for learning, practicing and reflecting on the methods of qualitative research. Best would be to keep to the same seminar convenor as last semester, but if you need to change just contact one of us.

This seminar will be conducted in English. There are no requirements regarding the level of language proficiency needed and you may hand-in your assignments in German, too. However, participants should be interested in doing the exercises in English.
