NextGen Decisions: Global Challenges, Local Action
A 5-Day Interactive Event Exploring Critical Decision-Making for the World of Tomorrow
University of Bremen – Bremen, Germany – Dec. 1-5, 2025

Overview:
The future of decision-making requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates diverse perspectives to address complex global challenges. "NextGen Decisions: Global Challenges, Local Action" is a five-day interactive event designed to engage students, academics from diverse fields (including political science, economics, law, artificial intelligence (AI) research, and philosophy), policymakers, as well as industry and administrative professionals in collaborative dialogue and practical problem-solving.
With special emphasis on digital governance, smart cities, and the ethical dimensions of technology and governance, this event offers a platform for participants to critically reflect on the challenges and practical implications of the decisions that will shape the future. During the week, participants will engage in hands-on activities such as interactive workshops, case studies and simulations, fostering an environment of dialogue and co-creation.

Objectives:
• Interdisciplinary Approach: Connect political science, economics, law, AI-research, and philosophy to offer a holistic view of decision-making in the context of emerging global challenges.
• Global Challenges, Local Solutions: Address how global issues like structural and digital transformation can be tackled through local governance and innovative decision-making frameworks.
• Active Learning, Dialogue and Collaboration: Equip students with practical and reflective tools and foster meaningful exchanges between students, scholars, policymakers, industry and administrative leaders to bridge theory and practice in decision-making.

The event is structured around the following three main themes and perspectives that explore how AI is reshaping economic decision-making, governance, and ethical frameworks in response to global challenges through local action.
1. AI and Economic Decision-Making:
Examining how AI can support local economies in addressing global challenges such as supply chain disruptions, market volatility, and structural change. Key areas of focus are the role of AI in shaping economic policy, fostering inclusive growth, and tailoring decision-making to local contexts.
2. Smart Cities & Digital Governance:
Exploring how AI and digital technologies are reshaping urban environments and governance systems. Topics include data privacy, the role of AI in public services, public trust and social acceptance, and the balance between technological efficiency and responsible, people- oriented governance.

3. Ethical and Legal Dimensions of Decision-Making:
Engaging with the ethical and legal questions surrounding the increasing influence of AI in governance and society. What are the implications of delegating decision-making to algorithms? How do we balance technological progress with human values and rights? Which legal frameworks are necessary for responsible governance in an AI-driven world?

Interactive Elements:
• Simulations: A Decision-Making Lab where students take on decision-making responsibilities to address challenges through AI, digital governance, and ethical decision-making.
• Workshops: Led by academics and professionals, these sessions focus on interdisciplinary problem-solving and collaboration.
• Case Studies: In-depth examinations of initiatives in digital governance.

Target Audience:
This event is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying Political Science, Economics, Law, Philosophy, Professional Public Decision-Making, and related fields.

Credit Points:
This is a 3 ECTS-course with a workload of 75 – 90 hours.

Expected Outcomes:
By the end of the five-day event, participants will:
• Develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the critical decisions shaping global challenges and driving local action.
• Engage with the ethical and legal dimensions of AI in governance, reflecting on how values and legal norms guide technological innovation.
• Gain practical skills in decision-making and problem-solving through interactive workshops and simulations.
