Kommentar/Beschreibung

Why does a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz influence your heating bill, food prices, and daily life in Germany?

Many of you are watching the news from the Middle East—seeing how tensions disrupt oil flows, block supply routes, and drive up energy prices. What seems far away is actually close: higher costs, uncertainty, and the feeling that the systems supporting daily life are more fragile than they look.

This has happened before. In 1914, a British naval blockade isolated ports like Bremen and Hamburg. As food and fuel collapsed, Germans turned to Kriegsbrot made with sawdust and acorn coffee. While the British Empire secured Middle Eastern oil to power its future, Germany—excluded from these flows—turned to coal and synthetic fuels, a path that was as environmentally destructive as it was politically explosive.

What you are witnessing today is the latest chapter in a century-long pattern. In this course, we move beyond the headlines to examine the circulatory system of global power:
• Weaponized Infrastructure: How pipelines, shipping lanes, and financial sanctions act as tools of power
• Contested Ecologies: Why water, oil, and land are sites of political struggle
• From Region to Everyday Life: How processes in the Middle East shape environments, economies, and daily life elsewhere

Join us to explore how struggles over energy and ecology in the Middle East didn’t just shape a region—they helped build the modern world.
